J.D. Vance: 51% Approve of Trump VP Pick

A majority of voters like former President Donald Trump’s choice of Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance as his vice presidential running mate.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that 51% of Likely U.S. Voters approve of Vance as the Republican vice-presidential candidate, including 31% who Strongly Approve.  (To see survey question wording, click here.)

The 39-year-old Vance is the youngest vice presidential pick since Dwight D. Eisenhower made Richard Nixon his running mate in 1952.  Seventy-five percent (75%) of Republican voters approve of Vance as their party’s VP choice, including 52% who Strongly Approve. Vance also gets approval from 30% of Democrats and 48% of voters not affiliated with either major party.

The survey of 995 U.S. Likely Voters was conducted on July 15-16, 2024 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC. See methodology.

Fifty-two percent (52%) of whites, 40% of black voters, 55% of Hispanics and 47% of other minorities approve of Vance as the Republican vice-presidential candidate.

More men (54%) than women voters (47%) approve of Vance as Trump’s running mate.

The choice of Vance as the Republican VP candidate is approved by 47% of under-40 voters, and 51% of those 40 and older. Voters 65 and older are most likely to Strongly Approve (39%) or Strongly Disapprove (26%) of Vance as Trump’s running mate.

Fifty-two percent (52%) of self-identified conservative voters Strongly Approve of Vance as the GOP’s vice-presidential candidate, as do 17% of moderates and 13% of liberals.

The choice of Vance as Trump’s running mate is approved by 58% of government employees, 48% of private sector workers, 54% of entrepreneurs and 50% of retirees.

Breaking down the electorate by income categories, a majority of voters earning between $30,000 and $100,000 a year approve of Vance as the Republican vice-presidential candidate, while a majority of those with annual incomes above $200,000 disapprove.

A majority of voters say the recent assassination attempt against Trump has made them less confident in the Secret Service, and even more worry that Trump will be targeted again.

Although many voters believe the gunman who tried to assassinate Trump was probably driven by mental illness, most Republicans blame the shooting on the rhetoric of Trump’s enemies.
