Edwards Launches Campaign, Trails Giuliani
John Edwards (D) went to New Orleans on Thursday and formally launched his 2008 campaign for the White House. A just released Rasmussen Reports poll shows Edwards trailing Rudy Giuliani (R) 49% to 41% in a general election match-up. Forty-seven percent (47%) have a favorable opinion of the Democrats’ 2004 Vice Presidential nominee while 41% have an unfavorable view.
Those results are similar to surveys conducted a month ago. In the earlier survey, Edwards trailed Giuliani 50% to 41% and was viewed favorably by 48% of Likely Voters. In making his announcement today, Edwards called for withdrawing troops from Iraq. Voters strongly support a recommendation from the Iraq Study Group to remove almost all U.S. combat troops from Iraq by early 2008.
