Biden’s Legacy: Divided Nation, Damaged Party

Joe Biden campaigned for president on a promise to unite Americans, but he leaves office with most voters saying he failed – and hurt his own party in the process.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that 55% of Likely U.S. Voters say America is a more divided nation after the four years of Biden’s presidency. Just 16% think the country is less divided, while 30% believe the level of division is about the same as before Biden became president. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

The survey of 1,220 U.S. Likely Voters was conducted on January 16 and 19-20, 2025 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC.
