What They Told Us: Reviewing Last Week’s Key Polls - Week Ending November 26, 2016
After a drawn out and contentious year in politics, Americans finally took a break this week to give thanks with family and friends.
An overwhelming percentage of Americans still say they have a lot to be thankful for, even if they put slightly less importance on Thanksgiving as a holiday. Most planned on eating Thanksgiving dinner at home or at a relative’s home.
Few Americans planned on traveling for the holiday.
Despite all the hype, most Americans planned on sitting out the Black Friday sales this year. Still, Americans are ready to shop and spend even more on holiday gifts this year.
Thirty-three percent (33%) of Likely U.S. Voters think the country is heading in the right direction, which ties the highest finding of 2016, last reached in mid-August.
Forty-seven percent (47%) are more worried that president-elect Donald Trump will change things too much, while 34% are more concerned that he will change things too little. Thirty-five percent (35%) of all voters say Trump is more likely to govern on a bipartisan basis, but 44% expect him to govern like a partisan Republican.
Voters have a more positive opinion of Trump following his unexpected victory than they did throughout his campaign.
More than half of voters feel comfortable with the prospect of one party controlling both the Executive and Legislative branches of government, as Republicans will do when Trump enters the White House in January. Democratic voters have changed their tune on this arrangement following Election Day.
Voters appear to be strongly on board with two policies Trump is calling for when he enters the White House: deporting illegal immigrants convicted of major felonies and mandatory prison sentences for those who try to return.
