A Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 64% of Americans would like to see U.S. troops brought home from Iraq within a year. That ties the highest percentage found over the past nineteen weeks. That number is up three points from a week ago and four points from two weeks ago. Over the last nineteen weeks, the number wanting troops home within a year has ranged from a low of 57% to a high of 64%.

Twenty-nine percent (29%) now want the troops brought home immediately. That number has jumped five points from a week ago.

Looking at the other end of the spectrum, 32% want troops to remain in Iraq until the mission is complete. That is down two points from a week ago. The number of Americans who want the troops to remain and finish the mission had ranged from 32% to 39% since tracking began.

The number of men who would like to see the troops brought home as risen over the past week, from 54% to 61%. Sixty-six percent (66%) of women would like to see the troops brought home within a year. Last week, 42% of men wanted the troops to stay until the mission is complete. This week, that number has dropped to 34%.

While the number of men wanting the troops to remain in Iraq has decreased, the number of Republican voters has increased. While 67% of GOP voters would like to see the troops remain in Iraq until the mission is complete, only 31% would like to see them brought home within one year. On the democratic side, 88% would like to see the troops brought home within the year while only 10% would like to see them stay.

In early February, confidence in the War on Terror reached its highest level in three years.

Rasmussen Reports has been tracking this question weekly since late August. The survey was conducted in partnership with Fox Television Stations, Inc.
