As the Super Tuesday campaigning winds down, New York Senator Hillary Clinton’s lead in neighboring New Jersey has fallen to single digits. The final Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of the Garden State Primary found Senator Hillary Clinton attracting 49% of the vote while Senator Barack Obama earned 43%. That six point lead for the former First Lady is down from a twelve-point lead earlier in the week. Three weeks ago, Clinton led Obama by eighteen percentage points. Clinton’s support, at 49%, is unchanged from earlier in the week. Obama has picked up six percentage points since the previous poll. The candidates are essentially even among male voters while Clinton has a ten-point lead among women. Earlier in the campaign, she had a much larger lead among women. As in many other states, Clinton does best among senior citizens while Obama is strongest among the youngest voters. Obama and Clinton are tied among the Garden State’s politically liberal Democratic Primary Voters. Clinton leads among moderate and conservative Democrats. Forty-four percent (44%) of the state’s voters view the economy as the top voting issue for Election 2008. Twenty-three percent (23%) say it’s the War in Iraq while 13% believe Health Care topics are the highest priority. Clinton leads Obama nationally in the Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll, but Obama has gained ground since his victory in South Carolina. The Senator from Illinois has taken a one-point lead over Clinton in California. He also holds a sizable lead in Georgia. Connecticut, Alabama and Arizona are close while Obama is gaining fast in Missouri. Clinton leads in New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Tennessee (see summary of Super Tuesday polls). On the day before Super Tuesday, for the first time all year, Rasmussen Markets data shows that Clinton and Obama have roughly equal chances of winning (current prices: Clinton %; Obama % ).
