Thanksgiving Ranks Number Two on List of Most Important Holidays

During the past six months, Rasmussen Reports has been asking Americans to rate the nation’s holidays and the clear winner so far is the Fourth of July. The summer celebration of our nation’s birthday is seen as one of our most important holidays by 61% of all Americans. Just 4% see it as among the least important celebrations.

Thanksgiving is second so far with 46% considering it one of the most important holidays and only 6% saying it’s one of the least important.

Memorial Day, matches Thanksgiving with 46% saying it’s one of our most important days. However, 5% take the opposite view. There are clearly questions as to whether Memorial Day is celebrated as intended or simply seen as the unofficial beginning of summer.

However, over the next six months, we’ll be completing the annual cycle of holidays and the top spots may shift—Christmas, New Year’s Day, and Easter are among the holidays still to be measured.

Other holidays rank far lower on the national priority list. Veterans Day is seen as most important by 43% and least important by 6%. Only 29% say Mother’s Day is the most important while an even smaller number--17%--say the same about Father’s Day.

Labor Day is considered one of our most important holidays by 22%. Another 16% say it is one of our least important holidays. It’s relatively low standing may be due to the fact that 58% have an unfavorable of Labor Unions.

Finally, Halloween received a frightfully high standing as our nation’s least important holiday at 48%. Just 6% say it’s one of our most important celebrations.
