The final holiday countdown is on and of all of the arrangements to be made, travel plans are not high on the list this year. Sixty percent (60%) of American adults plan to spend the holidays at home (see crosstabs). A Rasmussen Reports survey found that just 34% have out-of-town travel on their holiday agendas. Ninety percent (90%) of Americans say they celebrate Christmas while 3% will celebrate Hanukkah and 2% will recognize the Winter Solstice. Three percent (3%) have holiday plans that include other religious observances or occasions. A separate survey found that Americans overwhelmingly prefer hearing “Merry Christmas” rather than “Happy Holidays.” Nearly two-thirds of all Americans (63%) say that attending a religious service will be part of their holiday plans this year. Twenty-nine percent (29%) have no plans for organized religious observances. Seventy-eight percent (78%) will decorate their homes while 21% will skip the decorations this year. Married individuals (84%) are more likely to decorate than singles (66%). While most respondents in each age bracket say they’ll decorate their homes, those aged 40-49 are most likely to decorate (83%) and those 65 and older are the least likely (60%.) An earlier survey found that 62% of Americans will decorate a Christmas tree. Only 14% will go Christmas caroling this year while the vast majority (80%) will not. Most Americans had started their Christmas shopping by the time Thanksgiving was behind us. Crosstabs available for Premium Members only.
