Eighty-three percent (83%) of Americans say they celebrate Christmas this year, while 3% say they celebrate Hanukkah and 3% will recognize the Winter Solstice. Last year 90% of Americans said they would celebrate Christmas. According to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey, fewer people plan on decorating their homes for the holidays this year. Most Americans (67%) say they intend to decorate, that is down from 78% in last year’s poll. Twenty-four percent (24%) do not plan on decorating. Sixty-one percent (61%) plan on attending a religious service this holiday, while 31% do not, with a larger percentage of Republicans (74%) than Democrats (54%) saying they will go to a service this year. Fewer people are also choosing to be apart of this season’s travel rush, with 70% opting to stay home and a quarter (25%) choosing to travel. Last year, 34% said they planned on traveling for the holidays while 60% chose not to. Most people do not plan on partaking in any Christmas caroling this year. Only 13% will lift their voices in song while 79% will not. Slightly more men (16%) than women (10%) said they would be caroling this year. In a separate survey, a plurality (43%) of adults consider holiday gift shopping a fun experience. Thirty-five percent (35%) find shopping to be an unpleasant chore, while 18% say it’s somewhere in between. Younger adults are far more enthusiastic about holiday shopping than their elders. At the end of the Thanksgiving holiday, 45% had started their holiday shopping, while 50% said they did not. Another survey found that 67% of Americans prefer stores to use the phrase “Merry Christmas” rather than “Happy Holidays. See survey questions and top-line results.
