Sixty-five percent (65%) of American adults say that the holiday season should focus more on the birth of Jesus. A Rasmussen Reports survey found that 17% disagree and believe their should be less of a Christian emphasis. A survey taken during last year’s holiday season found that 72% believed Jesus should be a greater focus of the holiday season. An earlier survey found that 59% of Americans plan to attend a Christian Church service on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. Another Rasmussen Reports holiday survey found that 69% of Americans prefer stores to use the phrase “Merry Christmas” in their seasonal advertising rather than the generic “Happy Holidays.” Just 23% prefer the “Happy Holidays” greeting. Sixty-two percent (62%) of Americans will have a Christmas Tree, but most will be artificial. Only 14% will go Christmas caroling this year. The Nativity Story, the most recent film depiction of the birth of Christ, was released in theaters at the beginning of December and is currently on the box office Top 10 list. It has grossed nearly $16.5 million thus far. Surveys conducted earlier this year found that 54% of Americans believe the Bible is literally true although that number varies widely from state-to-state. Fifty-three percent (53%) of churchgoers believe attendance at their church is increasing. Of course, even among those who focus their holiday celebration on the birth of Christ, many caught up in the shopping frenzy associated with the season. With two weeks to go, 23% of Americans say they’ve already finished their shopping this year. Twenty-eight percent (28%) have yet to start. For those interested in shopping with a Christmas tie, Wal-Mart, Kohl’s, Sears, Macy’s and Target are among the retailers mentioning Christmas this season.
