Nine-out-of-ten Americans (91%) believe that cigarette smokers are aware of the health dangers involved with the practice. A Rasmussen Reports survey of 800 voters found that figure is even higher among those who smoke. Perhaps because of this view, 70% believe that cigarette companies should not be held liable for the health problems of those who smoke. Only 19% disagree and believe the companies should be held liable. This attitude is found across partisan and demographic lines. Among those who currently smoke cigarettes on a regular basis, 26% believe that the companies should be held liable for health problems. Sixty-three percent (63%) of smokers disagree. However, just 52% agree with the Supreme Court ruling overturning a $79.5 million dollar award to the widow of a smoker. Twenty-nine percent (29%) disagreed with it while 19% are not sure. Republicans and unaffiliated voters tend to agree with the ruling. Democrats are more evenly divided—39% agree with the ruling and 34% disagree. Fifty-nine percent (59%) of men agree with the court ruling, a view shared by 46% of women. The story, however, has not attracted much attention. Just 8% of Americans say they’ve followed news of the Supreme Court decision Very Closely.
