Incumbent Democratic Governor John Baldacci has eked out a five-point advantage over Republican challenger Chandler Woodcock in the latest Rasmussen Reports election poll of Maine's gubernatorial race.

Baldacci now leads 44% to 39% (see crosstabs). Ten percent (10%) of Maine's electorate are still undecided, and 7% opt for a third-party gubernatorial candidate (of which there are three in play).

Last month, Baldacci led by a single percentage point, after leading by six points in July, two in June, seven in April, five in February. Baldacci's support has been in the 40s all year, Woodcock's mostly in the 30s.

Neither candidate is a clear favorite given the tightness of the race, the ups and downs, and the continued uncertainty of many voters. But despite his political fumbles and the state's troubled economy, for most of the year the incumbent has maintained at least a sliver of an edge.

Governor Baldacci is viewed very unfavorably by 27% while just half as many, 14%, have a very favorable opinion of him. In addition, 26% "strongly disapprove" of the job he's doing as Governor.

Woodcock's favorable numbers are comparable if a little lower. Fewer view him "very unfavorably" (19%), though that's a six-point increase since August.
